Every person, at least once in a lifetime, is enjoying a certain set of activities in its free time. We call them hobbies and they are usually the results of somewhat particular interests. Some hobbies can be practiced individually while others may require a team or coworkers to participate. Some are more oriented toward brain activity, while others are more physical. But, the most important thing about hobbies is that many of them have a positive influence on our health. As it often happens, over time we are losing touch with these activities. Some for the lack of time, while others are just getting lazy. No matter what, hobbies that will help you stay in shape are necessary and you should remind yourself about that fact.

Sounds a bit obvious, but actually we tend to forget that. In general, we all like to think we are paying the proper attention to our health. However, the truth is that we are usually not, not even close. People don’t like to admit that to themselves, but many health issues can be solved with just a partial engagement. For example, if you do a little research over the internet you will see that martial arts benefit body and mind. You don’t have to make a career out of it, and just some occasional training can benefit you. Everyone should be able to choose something, if nothing, at least for stress relief. Some of the most common hobbies can be generally classified in a couple of groups:

  • Individualist hobbies
  • Hobbies that require teamwork or cooperation
  • Goal-oriented hobbies like traveling
  • Craftsmanship and skill works

But, it is much easier to call them with their own names instead of classification.

Martial Arts

They involve a lot of full-body workouts and are great for your cardiovascular system. Some of the martial arts may require you to get additional protective gear like gloves. But, you can practice many of them without it. Even though it is usually called self-defense, the more important aspect is the discipline. We say martial arts are both body and mind exercise because you learn to focus and learn to calm at the same time. For the physical part, no words are necessary. It’s a demanding yet effective way to lose body fat and improve your general health.

Fencing

You can expect to engage your entire body to the limits. To test its endurance, but the reflexes as well. Also, it’s not just physical, it requires great doze of focus, orientation, and mental engagement in order to participate the opponents move. Even though you will need expensive gear, you can check if the local fencing club provides it for their members. Many often do.

Archery

Archery is a great hobby if you wish to practice your focus, concentration, and precision of course. It’s not just plain and simple arrow shooting. It requires stability and strength in your body, and focus and endurance to remain still while aiming. In general, the gear can be quite expensive, however, it’s usually a one-time purchase.

Team sports activities

For those that enjoy teamwork, basketball, football, or baseball may be a perfect choice. The best thing about this kind of activity is that you can organize it among your friends or family. In fact, if you have kids, you can join them for a game or two. These sports engage your entire body and are great for people with a competitive spirit. Furthermore, you can check in your local area if there are some clubs and even join one of them.

Running and jogging

Both running the long-distance routes and jogging in your local park are a great way to get rid of the stress and make your body healthy. You will need to have high discipline if you want the best results in the long run, however, even recreational running is beneficial. Just grab a pair of sneakers and headphones and go straight to the park. You can even meet a lot of people doing the same thing you would never meet otherwise. Also, regularly walking your pet across your neighborhood can be a way of exercise.

Rock climbing

This is a great hobby for people looking to feel some adrenaline. However, outdoor rock climbing can be a dangerous and expensive hobby. The best way to practice it would be to join one of the climbing clubs and take a course. It is a challenging and rough hobby but very rewarding. On the other hand, if you don’t have the opportunity to go outside, you can always do indoor rock climbing. Some of the gyms are specialized in this kind of activity and have all the necessary gear and settings for a monthly fee. You can even buy and set your own gym if you have enough space and money in your house.

Particularly popular among nature enthusiasts is the hiking. Not only your body will enjoy the effort but you will also get a chance to enjoy the nature around you. Usually, you select a particular spot in nature, a mountain, a hill, or a lake, and go for a little exploration adventure.

Cycling

Bicycle is not only good for avoiding the traffic peak in your city but is a great way to exercise. You don’t need to plan to go to a distant spot outside of your local area, you can make it everyday activity. Every time you go out to a grocery store, do it with your bike. Don’t take your car when going to a friend, use a bike and your body will be thankful. Furthermore, this is a great way to explore your new neighborhood if you are recently moving.

Swimming

Having trouble with the extra fat after a long winter? No problem, swimming is one of the best ways to burn those extra calories. It engages your entire body and is particularly beneficial for your lungs. Actually, it improves your entire body shape after just a couple of sessions.

There are hundreds or more hobbies that will help you stay in shape, you just need to find the one that suits you. Remember your old days when you were a kid and try to find inspiration. Whether it is a horse riding, skating, bowling, or just a wood-crafting, anything will work. Just remember to get rid of your bad habits and try to endure in your “healthy” newfound way.
